Joseph Peter Abbott Jr.
Joseph Peter Abbott, Jr., 85, of Harborcreek, passed away peacefully at the Erie VA Medical Center on Tuesday evening August 31, 2010. He was born in Erie on May 26, 1925, a son of the late Joseph Sr. and Edith Herrmann Abbott. Joe was a 1942 graduate of East High School and served in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He graduated from Fenn College (C.S.U) and Gannon College with a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering and worked for General Electric until his retirement. He was also an avid dancer, bowler, horseshoe pitcher, woodworker, and former Times Old Newsie. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife and love of his life, Dolores Hitzelberger in 1955. Survivors include one daughter, Irene Abbott of Erie; one sister, Geraldine Cross of Madison, Ohio; one niece; two nephews; and his special caregiver, Patricia Wiezorek. Calling hours will not be observed. Family and friends are invited to a graveside service at Calvary Cemetery on Friday at 12:00 noon in section 3. Esther A. Anderson
Esther A. Anderson 80, formerly of Millcreek, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at Manchester Presbyterian Lodge. She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on November 25, 1929, she was a daughter of the late J. Mitchell and Esther Cooley Anderson. She was a graduate of the Oldfield's School, Glencoe, Md., attended Garland Junior College in Boston and graduated from Jordan Marsh's Executive Training Program. Esther worked at Jordan Marsh, in Boston for 5 years, Trask's in Erie for 5 years and the Boston Store for over 14 years, as a buyer and bought the Margaruite Flood Shop in 1975. She closed its doors 20 years later and retired. She was a past member of the C.E.B.A., the Junior League of Erie, the Zonta Club of Erie, and the University Club. She was a board member of the Hamot Aid Society, the Lake Erie Council of Republican Women, a member of Carpe Diem, the Manchester Presbyterian Lodge Auxiliary, and the Presque Isle Audubon Society. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Robert Crock. She is survived by a sister, Margaret Crock, of Sewickley, Pa.; a niece, Katrina Woodworth, of Pittsburgh; a nephew, Anthony Crock, of Bedford, Va.; and four grandnieces and three grandnephews. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Wayside Presbyterian Church, 1208 Asbury Rd., on Saturday, September 4th at 2 p.m. with Reverend James Haas and Reverend Brandon J. Dorothy M. (Rossi) Betti
Dorothy M. (Rossi) Betti, 92, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2010, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Erie, November 19, 1917, to the late Carl and Rose (Massello) Rossi. She graduated from Strong Vincent High School and was employed at the Boston Store, where she met Vincent J. Betti, marrying him on June 4, 1940. During World War II, while he served in the Pacific Theatre as a medical corpsman in the Army, she became one of the first "Rosie the Riveters" employed by Erie Resistor. She belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America, the Gannon Guild, and volunteered in the Head Start Lunch Program. In 1957, she and her husband, with two partners, established and operated Eduardo's Restaurant in Millcreek. Vince and Dorothy were founding members of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church where they remained active for many years. In 1976, they moved to Englewood, Fla. where they resided for ten years. Upon their return to Erie, they moved to Andrews Park Blvd. Vince passed away in 1996 and the next year Dorothy took up residence at St. Joseph Apartments, where she was very active. Dorothy was an excellent cook and baker, always sharing her ravioli, cavatellis, and homemade noodles with friends and family. Her homemade pies were legendary. She delighted in entertaining and was most happy when surrounded by family. She always looked forward to spending Christmas Eve with her nephew and godchild, Randy Corvino and his wife Cathy, at their annual holiday gathering. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Ross, in 1975. She is survived by her daughters, Kathy Skrypzak and Carla Betti (Tony Oprendek). Survivors also include her grandchildren, Jay Skrypzak (Julie), Steven Skrypzak (Linda), Carrie Post (Alton), Maria Livingston, and Ross Betti II (Fiancée' Diana Couch); great-grandchildren, Lauren and Rebecca Skrypzak, and Jayden Livingston; her sisters, Angeline Scolio, Jennie Gumowski, and Lucy Corvino, and several nieces and nephews. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mark the Evangelist Church in Lawrence Park on Saturday, September 4th at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Michael Allison officiating. Olympia J. Corsi Cargioli
Olympia J. Corsi Cargioli, age 92, formerly of Benetwood Apartments, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at Ball Pavilion at Brevelier Village. She was born July 1, 1918 in Erie, a daughter of the late Lidano and Flavia D'Amico Corsi. She lived in Erie all her life. She had worked at Marx Toys and as a beautician at Laura's Beauty Shop. She was a member of Saint Paul's Senior Citizens and of Five Decades at Our Lady of Mercy in Harborcreek. She worked as a senior aide at GECAC. She enjoyed her family, cooking, crocheting and playing cards. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank A. Cargioli; two brothers, Anthony and Leonard Corsi; and three sisters, Philomena DeFazio, Loretta Corsi and Olga Corsi. She is survived by one daughter, Loretta J. Patton and husband Tim of Erie; two sons, Frank J. Cargioli and wife Joanne of Erie and Ronald P. Cargioli and wife Annette of Noblesville, Ind. She is further survived by 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to call at the John R. Mary Ann (Ferko) Cobucci
Mary Ann (Ferko) Cobucci, 97 of Girard, died Monday, August 30, 2010 at Pleasant Ridge Manor West where she recently resided. She was born on March 26, 1913 in Meadowlands, Pa., a daughter of the late Michael and Maria (Vlek) Ferko. She was raised and educated in Allegheny County and worked in a glass factory there. She also owned with her late husband, Americo, The Pittsburgh Inn in Harlansburg. She moved to Kane, Pa. and later moved to Fairview in 1951, where she was a homemaker, taking care of her young family. She later worked at Polly's Drive-in in Fairview and at Rich's Frozen Foods in Lake City, where she retired from in 1976. Mary was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Girard and enjoyed reading, gardening, bird watching and cooking. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death in 2004 by her husband, Americo Cobucci, whom she married on September 1, 1940; daughter Marian L. Kaluzny in 2005; sisters Ann Yancosek, Helen Yancosek and Margaret Gonda; and brothers George, Michael, John and Stephen Ferko. Mary will be deeply missed by her son, Gene M. Cobucci and his wife, Karen, of Girard; son-in-law, Maurice Kaluzny of Erie, sister Catherine Ferralli of North East; brother Joseph Ferko and his wife, Ann, of Twinsburg, Ohio; grandchildren Kristin Kramer and her husband, Mark, of Girard and Christopher Cobucci and his wife, Kathleen, of Falls Church, Va.; great-grandchildren Katie Kramer and Joseph Cobucci; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. Virginia Marie Kaminski Conover
Virginia Marie Kaminski Conover, 86, of Erie passed away Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Hamot Medical Center. She was born June 3, 1924 in Erie, daughter of the late Maximillion and Martha (Kruszewski) Kaminski. She was a graduate of St. Benedict Academy, St. Vincent School of Nursing and St. Joseph College in Maine. She retired from Saint Vincent Health Center, where she was an RN Nursing Supervisor. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church for over 50 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold D. Conover, in 1993; two sisters, Florence Kunicki and Otylia Gdaniec; and two brothers, Raymond Kaminski and Max Kaminski. Survivors include three daughters, Patti Schwier and husband, B.T., of Center Hall, Pa., Cynthia Conover and husband, Douglas Roher, State College, Pa., and Pamela Perciavalle and husband, Frank, of Piqua, Ohio; a son, David Conover, and wife,Melanie, of Fairview, Pa. Also survived by 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. James Aland ("J.C.") Crosby Sr.
James Aland ("J.C.") Crosby, Sr., age 40, 609 Birch Court, passed away August 31, 2010, at his residence. He was born June 2, 1970, in Erie, son of the late Willie Jones, Jr. and Sara Jean Kinnard Crosby. A lifelong resident of Erie, he was employed at CRI and Voices of Independence as a home healthcare caretaker and had previously been employed with Allied Moving. He loved all sports, especially the New York Jets and Yankees and attending family gatherings. "J.C." loved his children and was a great dad. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Crosby, Sr. and Brianlee Crosby, and his grandparents, Willie Sr. (Papa Willie) and Ruby Kinnard (Mama Ruby). Nancy Louise Bayhurst Gillespie
Nancy Louise Bayhurst Gillespie, 75, of Erie, died Monday, August 30, 2010 at her residence. She was born in Oil City, Pa. on December 15, 1934, a daughter of the late Joseph and Edna Hargenrater Bayhurst. She was raised and educated in Oil City, Pa. where she graduated from St. Joe's High School in 1952. After High School, she moved to Erie and attended Villa Maria College, graduating in 1956. After graduating, she began her teaching career at Burton Elementary School. She taught until she had her first child in 1964. She was a stay-at-home mom until 1978 at which time she returned to teaching. She attained her Master's Equivalency in the late 1980's. She continued teaching in the Erie School District until retiring in 1996. She was a member of St. George Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Bayhurst; and two sisters, Marjorie and Constance Bayhurst. She is survived by her husband, David G. Gillespie, Sr., whom she married on June 25, 1960 at St. Stephen's Church in Oil City; two daughters, Nancy Pyle of Erie and Gretchen Brown, and her husband, Jack, of South Park, Pa.; three sons, David Gillespie, Jr., and his girlfriend, Michele, and her daughter, Kaia, of McKean, Fred Gillespie and his wife, Lisa, of Erie, and Timothy Gillespie and his wife, Amy, of Schwenksville, Pa.; five grandchildren, Sara, Rachel and Jacob Gillespie of Erie, and Aidan and Owen Gillespie of Schwenksville, Pa.; and a brother, Richard Bayhurst, and his wife, Grace, of San Jose, Calif. Joseph Edward Gilliam Jr.
Joseph Edward Gilliam, Jr., of Valrico, Fla., died from an apparent heart attack in his sleep on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the age of 66 in Bowling Green, Ohio. Joe was born April 1, 1944 in Portsmouth, Virginia to Eddie and Mary Gilliam. Joe is a 1962 graduate of Cradock High School in Portsmouth, Va. He received a master's degree in Bible and Ancient Languages from Bob Jones University, Greenville, S.C. In addition, he received a master's degree in Educational Administration from Kansas State University. Joe met and married the love of his life, Nancy at Cradock High School. They were married for 47 years. Together, they served in church ministry as a senior pastor of Bible Baptist Church in Salina, Kan. for seven years. He was Dean of Brown Mackey Business College and later began his career as a professional speaker and business consultant at Jack Parr Associates. He started his own business, Joe Gilliam Seminars, in Tampa, Fla. and developed a relationship with National Seminars as an independent contractor for the last twenty years. He was the author and presenter of "Winner in You", "How to Coach an Effective Team" and "How to Handle Difficult People". Joe was passionate about self improvement and helping people to become all they could be. He invited participants to start down the road to self-improvement and then gave them encouragement along the way. Joe was considered by many as a mentor and great friend. He received Jesus Christ as his Savior during his freshman year in college, taught Sunday school, served as a deacon and recently attended a mission church in Valrico. He loved God unashamedly and his desire was to see others follow Christ. Coach Joe changed the lives of many, not only those who attended his seminars but those who read his morning messages. He loved to minister to people through birthday, anniversary or sympathy cards. He loved to read his Bible, history, and Christian fiction. His favorite things to do were to go to the beach, attend theatre and the movies, and travel. He had a stack of Bible verses that he was memorizing with him when he died. He hardly went a day without his morning walk. Joe loved watching basketball, softball, and especially Gator football. He loved to participate in his children and grandkids' lives, attending many piano recital, softball and baseball games, and theatre productions. Anything his kids or grandkids were involved in, he supported. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Nancy; their children, Angie and Dan Reid, Sean and Marion Gilliam and Karis and Chris Denhoff. Grandchildren are as follows, Cole Gilliam, Olivia Denhoff, Sarah Gilliam, Nathaniel Reid, Seth Reid, Danielle Reid, Hayden Gilliam (deceased), Grace Denhoff, Cade Denhoff, and Hope Denhoff. Joe is also survived by his mother, Mary Gilliam and his brother, Evangelist Tom Gilliam and his wife, Beth of Watkinsville, Ga., as well as their three sons, John, Charles and Joseph and their families. He will be missed by Nancy's brother, Lew his wife Tammy and their children, Tyana and Drew and also his mother-in-law, Lora Flowers. Funeral services were held on August 17, 2010 at Bell Shoals Baptist Church in Brandon, Fla.; burial followed at Serenity Meadows Memorial Park, Riverview, Fla. Paul S. Kim
Paul S. Kim of Hernando, Fla., died on August 31, 2010. Born in Korea, he came to the U. S. in 1954 to receive his education. Having received his BA, MA and Ph.D. degrees, he began to teach at colleges and Universities in N.J. and Pa., since 1964. As a Professor and Chairman of the Political Science Department at Gannon University, Erie, Pa., he taught many courses in political science subjects from 1966 - 1997. He published one book and his many articles appeared in well known professional journals throughout the world. He is survived by his beloved wife, Youngja Kim. Services for Mr. Kim will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the Beverly Hills Chapel of Hooper Funeral Homes with Pastor Adam Jones officiating. Dennis Michael Marini
Dennis Michael Marini, 68, of Winter Park, Florida passed away on August 22, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania and was a graduate of Cathedral Prep in 1960. He received his Bachelor's degree from John Carroll University in 1964 and his MBA from Xavier University in 1972. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents Olindo and Marie Marini. Dennis will be missed by all and especially by Kathy, his wife of 47 years and his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Gina Marini of St. Petersburg, Fla., grandchildren Taylor, Torie and Kasie; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Lynne Marini of Savannah, Ga., grandchildren Chase, Cooper, and Coleman; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Michael Lynch of South Dartmouth, Mass.; grandchildren Madison and Macguire; and his brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Patricia Marini of Torrance, California. He was employed both at General Electric and Harris Corporation, where he retired in 1999 as Vice President of Human Resources for Harris Semi Conductors in Melbourne, Florida. After retirement, he served many years as a consultant for a number of major corporations nationally. Dennis will be missed by all for his intelligence, outstanding leadership qualities, and most of all for his unselfish, caring spirit that transcended throughout all of his professional and personal relationships. Violet was a homemaker. She is survived by two sons, Bradley Miller (Debbie) of Erie and Douglas Miller of Allen, Texas; one sister, Lucille Pratt of Erie; two grandchildren, Garrett and Daniel Miller; nieces and nephews. Mary L. Noerr
Mary L. Noerr, 90, formerly of Cranesville, died Monday, August 30, 2010 at Pleasant Ridge Manor. She was born July 15, 1920 in Mahoning Twp., Indiana County, a daughter of the late Harry and Alice (Travis) Lantz. She was raised and educated in the Punxsutawney area, and had worked for Punxsutawney Sportswear for many years. In 1969 she moved to the Albion area. Mary attended the Cranesville United Methodist Church and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, baking, building and painting lawn crafts. Her greatest joy in life was being a mother and taking care of her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 2007 by her husband, John E. Noerr, whom she married on August 22, 1939 in Punxsutawney, Pa.; son, John R. "Dick" Noerr; sisters, Bertha Bowser, Hazel Dalke, Doris Manjoine and Bonnie Lantz, in infancy; half sister, Anna Brown; brothers, Harry, Howard and Robert Lantz; and half-brother, John Lantz. Mary is survived by her two daughters, Josephine N. Erkiletian of Alexandria, Va., and Sharon Scholz-Humbertson and her husband, Herbert, of Hedgesville, W. Va.; two sons, Gerald Noerr and his wife, Linda, of Lake Worth, Fla., and Robert Noerr and his wife, Judith, of Albion; sisters, Eileen Jesensky of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Patricia DeRosa of Webster, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. William Dennis Polk
William Dennis Polk, 57, of Erie, passed away Sunday August 29, 2010 at home. He was born in Laurel, Miss. on September 19, 1952 to Cemay Barnes and the late Lawrence Gibbs. He was preceded in death by his step-father Jeff Barnes; brother, Howard Henderson; sister, Marian Polk; uncles, Ray, AJ, and Melford Polk; aunt, Lillie Mae Phelps; father in law, Robert S. Pruitt, Sr.; and brother in law, Lt. Colonel Larry H. Pruitt. William graduated from Academy High School (Go Lions!) in 1971. He was employed by Erie Forge and Steel for 35 years. He was an avid golfer, Dallas Cowboy fan, enjoyed Nascar, especially Jeff Gordon, and was a member of the Sportsman Club. Magen M. (Clowser) Porter, age 23 of Wesleyville, passed away Monday, August 30, 2010 as the result of an accident. She was born in Erie on November 3, 1986, daughter of Melinda Turner Bostaph and Dean Porter. Magen had attended Iroquois High School and played the bass drum in the marching band. She loved music, dancing and shopping. Besides her parents, Magen is survived by two sisters, Jessica Treiber (Patrick) and Madison Porter; one brother, Zachary Porter; step-father, Stephen Bostaph; step-mother, Candie Singleton; grandparents, Ethel Porter, Karen and John Yankuskie, and Ned and Kathy Turner; twin niece and nephew, Haven and Mason Treiber; her boyfriend, Jamie Wilt; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Joyce Ann Reynolds
Beloved Daughter, Sister, Mother, Aunt and Grandmother Joyce Ann Reynolds, age 59, of Friendship Apts. in Erie, passed away Saturday, August 28, 2010 at St. Vincent Health Center. She was born in Morganfield, Ky. on January 18, 1951, a daughter of Donna M. Miller and the late Elza H. Skidmore. Joyce worked at Erie Plastics and various other plastics shops over the years. She was a lover of life and almost always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met, and was always willing to lend someone a hand. Joyce most enjoyed spending time with her family and was very involved in many activities at Friendship Apartments. She especially enjoyed going to Bingo with her mother, and reading. She was an excellent dancer who loved country music and enjoyed solving crossword puzzles. She loved shooting pool and playing cricket for Red's Tavern. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, Henry and Florence Schulz; her beloved infant son, Russell C. Coy; her uncles, Richard R. Schulz and Marvin Schulz; and her aunt, Daphne Schulz. Joyce leaves to cherish her memory, her mother, Donna M. Miller of Erie; her sister, Rita M. Chrisman (Lynn) and nephew, Loren Chrisman and niece, Audrey Chrisman all of Pickerington, Ohio; three daughters, Glenda A. Gunn (Michael) of Erie, JoAnn M. Al-Hachami (Asama) and Angela N. Al-Hachami (Alaa) all of Detroit, Mich.; sons, Charles R. Miller (Melissa) of Clovis, N.M. and Christopher B. Edward C. Rogala
Edward C. Rogala, 91 of Erie died Tuesday August 31, 2010 at his residence. He was born in Erie on August 24, 1919 son of the late Kazmierz and Frances Sliszewski Rogala. Ed was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He retired as an Engineer from the American Sterilizer after 23 years of service. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church, a member of the Society of Holy Trinity Club where he served as President for 26 years retiring in 2006, Polish Falcons Nest 123, Polish Foresters, Alliance Home of Erie, Pulaski Club, Zukor Club and the CYS Club. He enjoyed golfing, playing pinochle and gardening. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Florence Wawrzyniak Rogala on November 11, 2008, a daughter Mary Jo Rogala, sister Ann Kaminski, and brothers, Frank, Andrew, Felix, Carl, Bernard, and Herman Rogala. Survivors include his daughter Regina Michaels, and husband David of Erie, son, Charles Rogala, and wife Geri of Casa Grande Arizona, Damian Rogala, and wife Patricia of Erie, Casimir Rogala and wife Lisa of Cleveland, Ohio, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and sisters in law Theresa Simonelli, and Barbara Wawrzyniak. Richard Jerome Scholze
Richard Jerome Scholze, age 83, of Lawrence Park, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010. He was born in New Kensington, Pa. on December 2, 1926, son of the late Frank and Margaret Mahan Scholze. Richard joined the Navy in World War II serving in the Pacific and worked at Kaiser Aluminum in Erie for over 37 years. Richard attended the Pittsburgh Art Institute and was an avid outdoorsman who loved boating, fishing, hunting and camping. He was an excellent photographer and passed on his love of photography to his children and grandchildren. He built his own home and loved to dance. He was a Roman Catholic and attended First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Dorothy Busan Scholze; one daughter, Rebecca Shaw and her husband Robert of Highland Heights, Ohio; and three sons, Richard Scholze and his wife Roberta of Champaign, Ill., Martin Scholze and his wife Sandy of Boardman, Ohio, and Robert Scholze and his wife Marilyn of Ripley, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, Tristan, Isen, Cydney, Erin, Amy, Matthew, Andrew and Colleen; and two great-grandchildren, Jack and Isabel; one sister, Betty Flynn of Fresno, Calif.; one sister-in-law, MaryAnn Busan; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Veronica Lackner, Rita Sullivan, Lois Cochran, Mary Alice Scholze and four brothers, Elmer, Clem, Ronald, and John Scholze. Owned and operated White and Sons Dairy Farm Russell H. White, 90, of Gulfport, Mississippi, died Monday, August 30, 2010, at Garden Park Medical Center in Gulfport. He was born September 7, 1919 in Conneaut Township, Pa., son of the late Verne and Marion Griffey White. He was a former resident of Albion, Pa. and Naples, Fla. He has resided in Gulfport since 2006. Mr. White owned and operated White and Sons Dairy Farm in Cherry Hill for many years and was later employed with Winn-Dixie Stores in Naples and Marco Island, Fla. He graduated from West Springfield High School and was a member of West Springfield United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Cherry Hill Grange before it was deactivated. Following retirement from farming, Mr. White enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing pool and shuffleboard, gardening and reading. Mr. White was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Brooks White and a brother, Walter S. White. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce (Alfred) Stewart of Gulfport, Miss. and Shirley (Robert) Nelson of Elko, Nev.; two sons, Howard (Linda) White of Albion, and Richard White of Gulfport, Miss; seven grandchildren, Sharon (Michael) Johnson, Mary (Matthew) Aninos, both of Gulfport; Jennifer (Anthony) Barnes of Mobile, Ala., Brian (Sadie) Nelson and Kevin (Cammie) Nelson, both of Spring Creek, Nev., Carrie (Daniel) White of Surprise, Ariz., Dale (Melissa) White of Albion; nine great-grandchildren, Erik and Meagan Johnson, Sarah and Michael Aninos, Zachary and Mallory Barnes, Keaten and Carson Nelson, and David White. Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Eleanor White of Albion and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
