Mary Barnett Carnes
Mary Barnett Carnes, age 84, of Harborcreek Twp., passed away Friday, May 28, 2010 at her residence. She was born in Armstrong County, Pa. on August 26, 1925, daughter of the late Harry R. and Elizabeth Stahlman Barnett. Mary was employed at H.L. Greens Dept. Store and Gospel Hill Nursing Home. She was a Charter Member of the YMCA, AARP and Harborcreek Baptist Church and a member of Harbor Lights and Keenagers. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening and cooking. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin J. Carnes, who died in 1989; her stepfather, William Rehm; one sister, Lucinda Burkett; and two brothers, David and John Barnett. She is survived by two daughters, Leota Carnes of Erie and Elaine Bollinger (Jeff) of Wattsburg; two sons, James R. Carnes (Charlotte) of Erie, Dennis Carnes (Laura) of Wattsburg; seven sisters, Twila Greeley of Brookville, Ruth Mathers of Harborcreek, Betty Moore of Summerville, S.C., Dorothy Burkett, Jane Bartlett and Sally Bartlett (Paul) all of North East, Shirley Trayer (Eugene) of Erie; two brothers, Harry R. "Jack" Barnett, Jr. (Dorothy) of North East, and Mervin Dean Barnett (Betty) of Harborcreek; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East, 2607 Buffalo Road on Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a Funeral Service there on Wednesday at 10 a.m. conducted by Rev. Dorothy May Di Luzio
Dorothy May Di Luzio crossed over Friday, May 28, 2010, to be reunited with her beloved husband Joseph. He preceded her in death on October 17, 2002. Dorothy was born February 2, 1926, daughter of the late Ernest and Ethel Ferer Hess. For the last several years, Dorothy resided at Twinbrook Medical Center. She previously lived with her daughter Janice, at St. James Manor, and on East 20th St. Dorothy fought a long battle against Alzheimer's Dementia, and a valiant but short battle against breast cancer. Dorothy worked at the Nubone Company, Foht's Dairy Bar and Odin Stove. Her favorite job though was being a homemaker, wife and mother. Dorothy was in the Drum and Bugle Corps at Academy High School from which she graduated. She played bugle, Hawaiian guitar and in later years, she taught herself the keyboard. She loved to crochet and sew and was most proud of making Marilyn's wedding dress and beautiful crocheted afghans. She made matching mother and daughter outfits for church and other occasions, and enjoyed many other crafts as well. Dorothy considered eating pizza and chocolate, especially M&M's, a hobby too. When she realized her time was coming closer, she said she looked forward to reuniting with Joe, as well as going to the Rainbow Bridge for precious pets, Tippy, Tiny, Boots, Buffy and Tuffy. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Marjorie and two half-brothers, Joe and Clay NaDeau. Dorothy leaves behind two daughters to cherish her memory, Marilyn Rizzo (Steve) and Janice Di Luzio-Bard (Ron) all of Erie; two grandsons, Nicholas (Maureen) and Paul (Regina) Rizzo, three great grandchildren, Alex, Kailee and Madison Rizzo; three step-great grandchildren, Cameron, Trevor and Katie; two nieces, Karen Ravis of Georgia and Diane Sheridan of Florida, a nephew, Ken Sheridan of Florida; her sisters-in-law, Anne Sheridan of Florida and Madeline Anelle of Georgia (who introduced her to husband Joe); several cousins and many 'grandpets'. Special thanks to the exceptional aides, Lauren, Richard, Tracy and Tina; nurse Rhonda, Candy and others at Twinbrook (especially Sandy K.) who in Dorothy's final days made Dorothy, and her family, more comfortable. And to hospice, who gave her the only gift she could use - company - to keep her from being alone. No calling hours will be observed. Friends are invited to attend a Committal Service at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery on Friday at 2 p.m. conducted by Pastor Mark Eberly. James S. Lesko
James S. Lesko, 67 a lifelong resident of Girard, died unexpectedly Thursday May 27, 2010 in Indianapolis while visiting his daughter. He was born May 3, 1943 in Girard, a son of the late John R. and Anna Groff Lesko Sr. Jim graduated from Girard's Rice Avenue Union High School in 1961 and was known as one of the graduating class's star basketball players. He later graduated from Gannon University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. He worked for the Lord Corporation as a Mechanical Engineer for 47 years, retiring in 2007. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Girard. He was often to be found making home improvements as well as helping his neighbors and friends in the community. He loved old cars, and was especially proud of his family. He loved being a "Papa" and attending all of the grandkids' events. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Hoehn. He will be greatly missed by his family which includes his wife, Janice M. Deiner Lesko, whom he married April 25, 1964 in Girard; also by a son Jeffrey S. Lesko and his wife Jill of Sarver, Pa. daughter, Jennifer S. Schwerin and her husband Doug of Indianapolis, Ind.; his grandchildren, Allison and Mario Lesko and Makena Schwerin; a sister Joyce Kulyk and her husband Larry of Albion; four brothers, John R. Lesko of Erie, Robert T. Lesko of Erie, Kenneth Lesko of LasVegas, Nev., Jerome Lesko and his wife June of Girard and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. A Prayer service will be held there on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery. Irene D. Vamos Majewski
Irene D. Vamos Majewski, 80, of North East, died Thursday evening May 27, 2010 at her residence following a lengthy illness. A resident of the Erie area all of her life she was born on June 20, 1929 a daughter of the late Paul F. and Annette J. Wiktorski Vamos. Irene was a 1948 graduate of East High School and earned a cosmetology degree from Ora Jean Beauty School. She owned and operated Leonard's Tavern at 22nd and Ash St. with her late husband for many years. Most recently she was an office manager at H.L. Greens, which became McCrory's, at the Millcreek Mall for 25 years before retiring in 1990. She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, the St. Boniface Ushers Club Ladies Auxillary, and the Harborcreek AARP Club. She enjoyed knitting, cooking, and baking. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Leonard A. Majewski. Survivors include one son, Leonard M. "Moe" Majewski of North East; one daughter Audrey Kazmaier and her husband Bruce of North East; one brother, Paul R. Vamos and his wife Wanda of Las Vegas, NV; one sister, Eleanor Johnson and her husband Glenn of Erie; a good friend, Phyllis Black of Erie; and several nieces and nephews. "Puzzy" John J. Puzarowski, Jr., age 71, of Harborcreek, was lovingly surrounded by his family when he passed away at his residence on Friday, May 28, 2010 following a brief battle with cancer. Richard K. Shumake
Richard K. Shumake, 89, formerly of Conneaut, Ohio, died Saturday afternoon, May 29, at the home of his daughter in Girard, Pa. He was born July 26, 1920, in Conneaut, and was the son of A. Jay and Ruth I. (Mosier) Shumake. He was a 1938 graduate of the former Rowe High School and was a lifelong Conneaut resident until February, 2008, when he moved to his daughter's home. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1948, and joined the Navy Reserves (a Seabee unit) in Erie, Pa., until he retired in 1980 as Senior Chief. Mr. Shumake was employed at the Nickel Plate Railroad, General Electric Conneaut Base Plant, and retired as a welder from Van Air of Lake City, Pa. He was a member of the former East Conneaut United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Evergreen Lodge #222 F&AM, a life member of American Legion both in Conneaut and Girard, and a life member of the Fleet Reserve. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of the Monroe Sportsmen Club. He also enjoyed martial arts and had studied Tai Chi for over 20 years. Survivors include his daughter Tamara J. (Brian D.) Lehman of Girard, Pa.; his son Timothy (Debbie) Shumake of Midland, Mich.; six grandchildren, Abigail Lehman and Theodore "T.J." Lehman both of Girard, Pa., Melinda (Jason) Long, Andrea Mellon, Craig Sleamon, and James Shumake all of Midland, Mich.; five great grandchildren, Gregory Long, Nicholas Long, Isabelle Mellon, Alixandra Mellon, and Nathan Shumake; and his sister Shirley Shumake of Conneaut, Ohio. Also surviving are a niece Mary Lou Mansfield-Lyons; and nephew Gary Wanda. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 49 years Dorothy A. Shumake; and two brothers J. Bernard and Edward Shumake; and his in-laws James and Claire Wanda. Graveside services will be at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, June 3, in East Conneaut Cemetery, with the Rev. Darrell Greenawalt, pastor of Girard (Pa.) United Methodist Church officiating. Friends may call at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio, on Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. Following the graveside service, a time of fellowship will take place at the Marcy Family Center, 180 Harbor St., Conneaut, Ohio. Joseph M. Tedesco
Joseph M. Tedesco, age 89, of Erie, died Friday May 28, 2010 at Hamot Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born February 11, 1921 in Erie, Pa., a son of the late Joseph and Susan Campanella Tedesco. He lived in Erie his entire life. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theatre- 562 Ambulance Crew where he received six battle stars, one bronze star and four silver stars. He had worked at the Times News for 40 years, retiring in 1987. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed bowling and golfing. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Carmella Grande Tedesco; three brothers, Frank, Dominic and Rocco Tedesco and four sisters, Rose Jury, Catherine Parker, Ruth Hiers and Theresa Austin. He is survived by his son, Gary M. Tedesco of Erie and two brothers, John Tedesco of Florida and Anthony Tedesco of Columbus, Ohio and one sister, Victoria Muto of Pittsburgh, Pa. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. No calling hours will be observed. Gay Louise Weber
Loving Mother and Best Friend Gay Louise Weber, age 60, of Millcreek, passed suddenly at Hamot Medical Center on Friday, May 28th, 2010. Gay was born in Erie on July 22, 1949, the daughter of the late James E. and Fay L. (Powell) Weber. Gay graduated from McDowell High School in 1967 and Edinboro State University (Summa Cum Laude) in 1971 with a B.S. Degree in Mathematics and a Masters Degree in Education in 1974. She had a 34 year career in Math Education with the Millcreek School District. After Gay retired she enjoyed tutoring, golfing, gardening, being outdoors and especially being at the beach. She was a former member of Lake Shore Country Club and the Kahkwa Country Club. She was a Loving Mother and a Best Friend. Survivors include a son, John Thomas Simmons, III (J.T.); a daughter, Sara Margaret Simmons; two brothers, Randy Weber wife Linda and a twin brother Grant Weber; two nieces, Kery and Kelly Weber; and a dear friend, Jim Dunlavey. Also surviving are several aunts and uncles. she will be sadly missed by all. Friends may call at the Brugger Home for Funerals, 1595 West 38th Street on Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend Services there on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
