Robert G. Barnette
Robert G. Barnette, 64, Erie, formerly of Silver Spring, Md., passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Hamot Medical Center. He was born in Erie on June 18, 1945, son of the late Irvin and Irene Crosby Barnett. He joined the U. S. Air Force after graduation from high school and resided in Silver Spring, Md., for over 25 years. He was retired from the U. S. Army after 18 years of service, last serving at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D. C. as an Isotope Specialist and previously at several hospitals in Germany. Robert loved sports, art, designing, singing and spending time with friends. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Parker Barnette, and a brother, Donald Joseph Barnett. He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Andre D. and Alfee D. Barnette, Silver Spring, Md.; three brothers, Irvin R. Barnett (Mary), David E. Barnett and Curtis Barnett, all of Erie; two sisters, Pastor Dorothy R. Ross (Random) and Carmen J. Barnett, all of Erie; two grandchildren; an uncle; two nieces; five nephews; and several cousins, many loved ones and friends, especially Solomon and Ocba. Leola M. Clark
Leola M. Clark, 82 of Edinboro, Pa., and former Kingsville, Ohio, resident, died Tuesday, March 9th, at the Millcreek Community Hospital in Erie, Pa. She was born October 26, 1927, in Ashtabula the daughter of Louis Franklin and Ola Mae (Schmidt) Palmer. She spent her winters in Naples, Fla., and her summers in Canadohta Lake, Pa. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, playing cards, cooking and she was known for her cabbage rolls. Surviving her is her husband, George Clark, whom she married June 10, 1995; two daughters, Aldine Roxberry, of Naples, Fla., and Kristie (Tom Drake) Lechefsky, of Edinboro; two sons, Jerry (Jane) Davis, of Jacksonville, N.C., and Mark Davis of Naples, Fla.; four step-children, Raymond Cedar, of Ashtabula, Barry Cedar, of California, Judy Andrejak, of Ashtabula, and Barb Edixon, of Kingsville; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Richard Palmer, of Tenn., Robert Palmer, of California, Harry Prine, of Jefferson, and Delno Prine, of Ashtabula. She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Harry Prine; her first husband, Howard Davis, her second husband, Paul Cedar; a son, Paul Davis; a daughter, Penny Adams; two granddaughters, Cathy Davis and Theresa Summers; two brothers, Paul Palmer and Charles Prine; and two sisters, Ella Jean Palmer and Eleanor Ann Prine. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 13th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 West Prospect Rd. Ashtabula, Ohio. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio. Calling hours will be Friday, March 12th, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Daniel James "DJ" Ellis
Daniel James "DJ" Ellis, 38, of Erie, died suddenly Sunday, March 7, 2010. He was born April 29, 1971, in Erie, son of the late Robert Ellis, Sr. and Patricia Ann Taylor Ellis. A lifelong resident of Erie, he achieved his high school equivalency in 2008. He worked as a laborer for various companies in Erie. "DJ" was an outgoing, adventurous, loving, jokester who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Besides his parents, Daniel was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mary Taylor and Mr. and Mrs. William Ellis, Sr. He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Ashley Nicole Pulliam, and a grandson of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two sisters, Kathleen Stepp (John) of Erie, and Trinita Ellis-Campbell, of Buffalo, N.Y.; three brothers, Scott Ellis, Robert (Chrishawn) Ellis and Marcel Ellis, all of Erie; four aunts, Mary Taylor, Margaret Shaw, Pearline Hobson, and Joyce Johnson, all of Erie; three uncles, Bruce Taylor, Robert King, and William Ellis, Jr., all of Erie; 18 nieces and nephews; nine great nieces and nephews; and many cousins, other relatives and friends. Oliver W. Griswold
Oliver W. Griswold, age 87, of Erie, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at his residence. He was born in Erie on May 11th, 1922, a son of the late Roger and Mary Griswold. Oliver graduated from Westminster Preparatory School and attended Gannon University. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII and was a P51 fighter pilot in the 55th Fighter Group of the 8th Air Force. Oliver was a member of Wayside Presbyterian Church, Hamot Board of Corporators, Kahkwa Club and Erie Club. He was also a member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Erie. Oliver will be remembered for his kind and gentle manner. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Griswold in 2003; a son, Oliver Griswold, Jr., in 2008; and three brothers, Roger, Charlie and George Griswold. He is survived by a son, John Matthew Griswold and his wife Evelyn, of Alexandria, Va.; two daughters, Mary Blank of Cleveland and Deborah Murray of New Britain, Pa.; and three grandchildren Matthew, Sarah and Julie Griswold. Lee D. Zello Jordan
Loving Mother & Grandmother Lee D. Zello Jordan, 80, resident of Pleasant Ridge Manor West, died Monday, March 8, 2010 at Saint Vincent Health Center. She was born November 23, 1929 in New York, N.Y., a daughter of the late Walter and Jean DeBartolo Zello. She was an avid pianist and entertainer and had worked as a model in New York City. She enjoyed sewing, fishing and playing bingo. She is survived by one daughter, Darlene L. Kenny, of Erie; and three sons, Vaughn Jordan and Frank Jordan, both of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Michael Jordan of Erie. She is also survived by three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. No calling hours will be observed. A private funeral service will be held at the family's convenience. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Celia M. (Bliley) Loomis
Celia M. (Bliley) Loomis, 80, of Wayne, New Jersey, formerly of Union City, Pa., passed away on Sunday, March 7, 2010. She was born May 10, 1929 in Union City, Pa. the daughter of the late Ward C. and Mildred (Dennis) Bliley. She was raised in Union City, Pa. and was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 19 of Union City, Pa. before moving to Wayne, New Jersey, where she transferred her membership and was a Past Matron in Wayne. She loved to read and play bingo. She had been employed by State Farm Insurance Company in Wayne, N.J. before her retirement. She was preceded in death by her parents, and survivors include her husband Ralph E. Loomis of Wayne, N.J., a brother Ward C. Bliley, Jr. of Claremont, Calif., two nieces Beth and her husband Brian of Middlefield, Ohio and Deidre and her husband Lee of Rolling Oaks, Calif. Several cousins also survive. Lucille M. Peck
Former Owner of "Somethin' Different" Beauty Salon Lucille M. Peck, 90, was led to heaven on Tuesday March 9, 2010 one day before her 91st birthday, following a brief illness. Devoted mother and loving friend to many, Lucille was born March 10, 1919 in Johnsonburg, Pa., daughter to Josephine Erich Wilhelm and Henry Wilhelm. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her four brothers, Theodore, Kenneth, Jack, and Regis as well as two sisters, Dorothy and Mary Jane, who died in infancy. Lucille graduated from Johnsonburg Area High School in 1936 and was employed at the Castenea Paper Mill until 1945. She moved to Erie to attend Ora Jean Beauty Academy and was employed as the first beauty owner and operator in the Beauty Salon at Hamot Hospital. She would also visit hospital rooms with her portable beauty shop to do some of the bed-ridden patients. She enjoyed this very much. She worked as a beauty operator at several other shops around Erie until opening up her own salon on Parade Street named "Somethin' Different" She ran this business for many years until retiring in 1998. Lucille still continued to do her friends' hair in the beauty shop located in the basement of her home for a few years after that. Lucille was one of the founding members of St. Luke Catholic Church and enjoyed traveling with her husband, cooking, and walking in her spare time. She loved being outside and was forever the welcoming smile to any visitor who would stop by for a friendly cup of coffee. Lucille was married to Gerald G. Peck on February 3, 1949 at Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, Pa. She enjoyed this loving marriage for 49 years until Gerald passed away in 1998. She is survived by her two caring children, daughter Remlee L. Peck of Erie and son Randall L. Peck and his wife Kelly Bruce Peck of Seal Beach, Calif. Lucille has many nieces and nephews around the country as well as a tremendous outpouring of precious friends who would make her sparkling blue eyes light up whenever they would visit. Lucille had a big heart and a great sense of humor that would make anyone smile when they were around her. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Family and friends may call at the Russell C. Walter A. Przybycin
Walter A. Przybycin, 92, a resident of Regency at South Shore, passed away Tuesday morning, March 9th at Sarah Reed Retirement Center, after a short illness. He was born in Erie on April 17, 1917, a son of the late Hipolit and Josephine Przybycin. Walter served in the Army during World War II. He was a skilled machinist who worked for the Skinner Engine Company, and later for General Electric Company , retiring in 1980, after more than 30 years of service. He enjoyed golf, tending to his small gardens, and visiting with family and friends. He was a lifetime member of the Polish Falcons, East Erie Turners, and belonged to several other clubs throughout the city of Erie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Sophie Zalewski, Mary Traczinski, and Dorothy Mozdy; and three brothers, Joseph Burke, John J. Przybycin, and Leonard Pry. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Cecilia Rogala Przybycin; and three children, Frank (Carol) Przybycin, of Erie, John (Mary Jo) Przybycin, of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Anna Marie (Paul) Koscelski, of Grayson, Ga. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael, Matthew and Christopher Przybycin, Carrie Williams, and Kara and Aubrey Koscelski; three great-grandchildren, Xavier, Sebastian and Thomas Przybycin; and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy M. "Dot" Randall
Dorothy M. (Dot) Randall, age 88, formerly of Fairview, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center. She was born in Kearsarge, Pa. on June 13, 1921, daughter of the late Hattie Struchen and Henry Kruse. Dot was a graduate of Fairview High School, class of 1939. She worked at Lord Manufacturing from 1940 to 1944 and was a salesperson at the Boston Store from 1945 to 1955. Dot was a member of Kingsley United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed volunteering her time whenever she was needed. She was a member of the Fairview Garden Club and a past member of Presque Isle Women's Club. Dot was also a past co-leader of a Girl Scout Troop. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed working on arts and crafts. Dot also liked spending time with her daughter and family. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband James D. Randall in 2009; three brothers, Donald, Earle, and Richard Kruse; and one sister, Bette Cassell. She is survived by her daughter Robin Kerr and husband Steve of Winchester, Va.; grandchildren, Scott Kerr of Falls Church, Va. and James Kerr of Winchester, Va. and a sister, Esther Kuntz of Girard and a brother, Fred Kruse of Fairview and sisters-in-laws Betty Kruse of Fairview, Marilyn Mehl and Constance Kruse both of Erie, and brother-in-law Gerald Cassell of Fairview, and several nieces and nephews. Harold J. Weiner
Harold J. Weiner, 87, of Erie, passed away Wednesday morning, March 3, 2010, at the VA Medical Center following a brief illness. A resident of Erie all of his life he was born on July 1, 1922, a son of the late Walter and Anastatia Pluta Weiner. Harry was a 1940 graduate of Erie Tech and went on to serve in the Army Air Force in the Tinian Islands, where the Enola Gay had taken off before dropping the first Atomic Bomb, during World War II. He worked as a sorter with the United States Postal Service for over 20 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 945 and the VFW. He enjoyed photography, traveling, airplane museums, and air shows. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters, Amelia Borkowski, Henrietta Daub, Leona Sutton, and Helen Goetz; and two brothers, Dan and Carl Weiner. Survivors include one daughter, Gretchen Anderson and her husband, Brian Adams, of Cleveland, Ohio; one sister, Virginia McClellan, of Erie; one granddaughter, Grace Adams; two nieces, Nancy Konieczki and her husband, Ray, of Erie, and Audrey Suroviec and her husband, Alex, of Waterford; and one nephew, Roger Anderson and his wife, Christiane, of Rome, N.Y. Many other nieces and nephews also survive. Friends are invited to a memorial service at the VA Medical Center Chapel, 135 East 38th St., Erie, on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Calvary Cemetery. Cleveland William Werntz
Cleveland William Werntz, age 59, of Washington Avenue, passed away Monday, March 8, 2010, at Hamot Medical Center. Born in Erie on October 16, 1950, he was a son of Marjorie Marie (Buchner) Werntz Aldrich, of Girard, and the late Elmer Roy Werntz. He retired in November 2009 as a material controller in General Electric Bldg. 2., after 35 years. He was a member of the Presque Isle Jaycees. Cleveland enjoyed traveling, cooking and watching the Food Network and WWE, and celebrating Halloween year-round. He was preceded in death by his father; his wife, Susan Irene (Thomas) Werntz, in 2004; and two step-sisters, Diane Guin and Kathi Aldrich. In addition to his mother, survivors include a daughter, Carrie Plyler, of Millcreek; a son, Christopher David Werntz, wife Thomasinna, of Ft. Stuart, Ga.; three grandchildren, Blake Werntz and Alexis Plyler, both of Millcreek, and Nevin William Carter Werntz, of North Carolina; a sister, Patricia Aldrich, husband Stephen, of Girard; two step-brothers, Tim Aldrich, wife Kathy, of Girard, and Doug Aldrich, wife Kathy, of Erie; two step-sisters, Linda Thompson, of Erie, and Jean Shoup, of North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. James J. Zink
James J. Zink, 85, formerly of West 32nd Street, passed away at Village at Lutheran Square Wednesday morning March 10, 2010. Born in Olean, N.Y. March 23, 1924 he was a son of the late Walter and Marcella Zink. He served in the Army in Europe during World War II and became a draftsman at Penelec, retiring over 20 years ago. He was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Church and the Third Order of the Carmelites. James was preceded in death by his wife, Helen T. Strike Zink, in 1978 Surviving are his sons, Mark J. and Richard G. Zink, both of Erie; two brothers, Robert Zink, wife Linda, of Tonawanda, and Raymond Zink, wife Pat, of Eggertsville, N.Y.; a sister, Betty Imfield, of Hamilton, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews.
