Mary Patricia Macdonald Campbell
Mary Patricia Macdonald Campbell, age 82, of Erie, passed away Friday March 5, 2010. Born April 11, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Catherine Crimmins Macdonald. Mary was a registered nurse that worked at numerous hospitals and nursing homes in Erie. Before her retirement she worked at the Soldier's and Sailor's Home. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards at the Erie Senior Center. She also liked gambling at the casino. She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Campbell, in 2000; a sister, Francis Laviolette; and four brothers, Donald, Ronald, Jack, and Hugie Macdonald. Survivors include her daughter, Cheryl Walburn, husband George of Erie; four sons, Bruce Campbell, wife Charlene, Ken Campbell, Friend Cheryl Caribou, Allan Campbell all of Erie and Brian Campbell Friend YvJuanya Sadberry of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Billy Wegelin, Eric Campbell, and Jessica Campbell; a sister, June Baker, husband Andy, of Ottawa, Ontario; a brother, Charlie Macdonald, wife Ann, of Edmonton, Alberta. Friends may call at the on Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the A. Brugger & Sons Funeral Home LLP, 845 East 38th Street at Pine Avenue. Ernesto Giuseppe Caserta
Ernesto Giuseppe Caserta, Professor Emeritus of Romance Studies at Duke University, died peacefully at his home in Durham on Saturday, March 6, 2010. He had been in ill health for several years. Born on March 19, 1937, in Montenero Valcocchiara (IS), Italy, a small village in the southern Apennines, he went to Naples at the age of twelve to attend school, earning the Maturità Classica from Liceo Genovesi in 1957. Later the same year he immigrated with his parents, Oreste and Elia (Miraldi) Caserta, to Erie, Pennsylvania. He earned degrees at Gannon College (B.A.), Tulane University (M.A.), and Harvard University (Ph.D.). He taught French and Latin for two years at Northwestern High School, Albion, Pennsylvania, before attending graduate school. He taught Italian language and literature at Boston University from 1967 to 1970, and at Duke University from 1970 to 2001. Professor Caserta was the author of numerous books and articles published in Italy and America, notably on the philosopher and literary critic Benedetto Croce, and nineteenth-century writers Alessandro Manzoni and Giacomo Leopardi. As a teacher he had as his goal to enable his students to read, understand, and be enriched by the great Italian writers, from Dante to Machiavelli, from Ariosto to Foscolo, Manzoni, Leopardi, Verga, and Montale. He is survived by his wife, Jane Caserta, son Vincent Talbot Caserta of Durham, son John Ernesto Caserta and daughter-in-law Sarah Leibel and a grandchild, Lucia Simone Leibel Caserta, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and five brothers and sisters, Clara Pede and husband Clemente, Vincent Caserta and wife Carmela, Antoinette Barboni and husband Livio, all of Erie, Bruno Caserta and wife Barbara of Girard, Pennsylvania, Enio Caserta and wife Armida of Brooksville, Florida, and several nieces and nephews and their children. Amelia P. Carone "Sally" Eisenman
Loving Wife - Mother- Grandmother - Friend Amelia "Sally" Eisenman passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Saturday, March 6, 2010 after a brief illness. She was born to Catherine and Cono Carone in Oil City, Pa. on November 28, 1918. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ford Eisenman, who passed away on March 12, 1983. Also awaiting her arrival in heaven were her sisters Florence Carone, Eva Rodgers and her brothers Tony and Paul Carone. After her husband suffered a stroke in June of 1975, Sally became his main caregiver. When he passed away in 1983, God granted her many more years to enjoy her life which she did to the fullest. Sally was known for her young at heart spirit, her sense of humor and her tremendous sense of fashion. She was passionately proud of her Italian heritage. She is survived by her three daughters, Carol Durkin, Nancy Eisenman-Elwell (Bud Elwell) and Kathy Eisenman. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Ford and John Eisenman, Carla Hart, Rich Durkin, Joy Durkin, Amelia (Amy) Anderson and Anthony Eisenman; six great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Mary Margaret Gillespie of Erie and Lee Eisenman of Austin, Texas and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the John Orlando Funeral Home, 2122 Raspberry Street, Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and are invited to attend a funeral mass at St. George RC Church, 5145 Peach Street, on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. followed by a burial in Calvary Cemetery, Oil City, PA. Theodore D. Helfand
Theodore D. Helfand, age 91, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and formerly of Erie died Saturday, March 6, 2010 in Pittsburgh. Born in Erie on January 19, 1919 he was the son of the late Samuel and Sylvia Margolis Helfand. Theodore attended Academy High School, and was a WW II veteran of the U. S. Army from May 1942 to November 1945, having served in North Africa as a sergeant in the MP. After returning home from the war, he worked with his father-in-law David Linder, and eventually founded his own company Helfand Molded Plastics. He was a member of Congregation Brith Shalom, as well as a past member of The Erie Yacht Club, The Kahkwa Club, The Aviation Club, Maennerchor Club, and The Erie Chamber of Commerce. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Edith Linder Helfand; a son; Jeffrey L. Helfand; two brothers; Saul and Alfred Helfand and two sisters; Edith Saunders and Alice Schoenberg. Survivors include his daughter Susan Topolsky and her husband David of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren; Eric Topolsky and Joshua Topolsky and his wife Laura all of New York. He is further survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley and Irving Camp as well as many nieces and nephews, and devoted family and friends. Friends may call at the Burton Westake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street at Powell Avenue on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of services at 2 p.m. with Rabbi Leonard Lifshen officiating. Jeanne M. (McDonald) McCormick
Jeanne M. (McDonald) "Mickey" McCormick, age 77, died Saturday March 6, 2010 at Hamot Medical Center following a lengthy illness. A lifelong resident of Erie, she was born on October 29, 1932, the daughter of the late Lawrence Earl and Myrna (Breed) McDonald. Her mother died before Jeanne was two years old. Her father later remarried and she was then raised by her loving stepmother, the late Mary E. Vickey McDonald. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her two sons; Gerard Patrick in 1985 and John Gerard in 1999 and by her only sister who died in December 2009, Frances Burkett of Punxsutawney, PA. Jeanne was a 1946 graduate of Sacred Heart grade school, class of 1950 at Villa Maria Academy, and in 1953 she graduated from the St. Vincent School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Vincent Health Center before having her family. She was an accomplished amateur artist and also played Bridge and belonged to a Book club. Jeanne was a member of St. Peter Cathedral and their Women's Council. She was also an early participant in Erie's Pro-Life organization. Jeanne is survived by her husband John J McCormick, Jr. whom she married on January 16,1954. Two daughters; Mary Therese Ciacchini (David Sr.) and Jeanne M. Rahill (Dennis), both of Erie and four sons; Owen J. McCormick, Sr. (Kimberly Nelson) of Erie; Rev. Patrick G. McCormick of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia; Matthew G. McCormick, Sr. (Pamela Robison) and Peter G. McCormick (Jill Gardiner) all of Erie. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren; Kassie, Ellen, David Jr., Caroline and Annie Ciacchini; Timothy, Maura and Megan Rahill; Owen Jr., Julia, Mary, Gerard, Patrick, Andrea, Mary Therese, Matthew Jr., Helen Ann, Katherine, Grace, John (Jack), Will, Sam and Maeve McCormick. Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Thursday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter Cathedral with her son Rev. Lindsey J. Michalski
Lindsey J. "Lulu" Michalski, age 23, of Millcreek Twp., died Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Hamot Medical Center. She was born on November 26, 1986 the daughter of Christopher and Crystal Michalski. She had been employed at Country Fair and Plastek Industries. Besides her parents, she is survived by two brothers, Kyle Michalski and William Michalski and his wife, Natalee, both of Erie, one niece, Tessa Watkins, her grandparents; Gerard and Martha Hall, John Michalski and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Joanne and Mary Ann Michalski and a best friend, Monica Owens. Lindsey liked history and all kinds of music and movies. She spent a lot of time reading or playing with her cats. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family. She even had one little man that referred to her as his LuLu. She enjoyed celebrating Halloween and St. Paddy's Day. Richard Roy Myers Sr.
Richard Roy Myers Sr., 87, formerly of East Springfield, passed away Friday, March 5, 2010 at Fairview Manor after a short illness. He was born March 18, 1922 in Ober, Indiana, son of the late Roy and Bulah Smeltzer. Richard served with the United States Army during World War II. He worked as a telegraph operator for the Nickel Plate, Norfolk & Western, and Norfolk & Southern Railroads, retiring with over 30 years of service to the railroad. Richard was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), he enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening, lawn care, working outdoors, and he was a passionate Chicago Cubs Fan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard R. Myers Jr., and a sister, Emmabelle Myers. He is survived by his wife, Christine Myers, a daughter-in-law, Valerie Myers, of West Springfield, his grandson, Hans Myers, of West Springfield, a brother, Lavern Myers and his wife, Marty, of Elkhart, Indiana, one niece and two nephews. James L. Owens Sr.
James L. Owens, Sr. a longtime resident of Erie, died Sunday morning, March 7, 2010, at the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home in Erie following an extended illness. He was born in Oakman, Georgia, May 7, 1930, son of the late Aristo and Tennie Pack Owens. After being stationed in many places with the U.S. Air Force, he moved to Erie in 1963. He was employed as a production supervisor for Riley Stoker Corp. for 28 years before retiring in 1992. He attended Fairmont High School in Fairmont, Ga. before serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Lamb of God Lutheran Church and the Zukor Club. Jim was an avid baseball player, pitching for an Air Force team and the Riley Stoker Industrial League team in Erie. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Dolores Liocano Owens; five sons, James L. Owens, Jr. and his wife Mary, Joseph F. Owens and his wife Angela, Douglas A. Owens all of Erie, Michael T. Owens and his wife Darlene of Cochranton, Pa. and Donald A. Owens and his wife Deborah of Duncan, S.C.; three daughters, Deborah L. Danielewicz and her husband Michael, Mildred E. Roth and her husband John all of Erie and Laurie J. Bulkley and her husband Dave of Preston, Conn.; a brother, William Owens and his wife Muriel of Fla. and four sisters, Ruth Collis of Chatsworth, Ga., Velma Harrison and her husband Harry of Canton, Ga., Ann Swanson and her husband Luke of Calhoun, Ga. and Patsy Mealor and her husband Don of Sugar Valley, Ga. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Jim is preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret B. Owens and four brothers, Edward, Robert, John and David Owens. Friends may call Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Russell C. Schmidt and Son Funeral Home, 5000 Wattsburg Road (corner of Pine Ave. and East Gore Road, I-90 Exit 29). A service will be held there at a time to be announced.
