Arlene L. Yates Babo
Arlene L. Yates Babo, age 80, of Erie, passed away Friday, March 5, 2010 at Hamot Medical Center. Born May 15, 1929 in Luthersburg, Pa. she was the daughter of the late Sherman and Mary Crystal Luther Yates. Arlene was a homemaker and a founding member of St. Luke Church. She was the silent "Scrabble Queen" defeating all opponents in her way. She was an avid bowler, loved tennis, and enjoyed reading. Arlene was described by her daughters as "the best mother in the world." Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters, Vivian Yates and Betty Carter, and a brother, Sherman Yates. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Robert "Bob" J. Babo whom she married on July 2, 1949; three daughters, Nancy Rowe, husband Craig, of Sharon Center, Ohio, Suzanne Winschel, husband Edward, of Erie, and Cheryl Best, husband Lloyd, of North East; four grandchildren, Stephanie and Jason Benney, Adam McCracken, wife Corinne, and Joshua Best; two great grandchildren, Kassidie and Moses; three nephews, Jim Yates, David Carter, and Kenny Yates; and a very dear friend, Mary Steiner. Friends may call on Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the A. Brugger & Sons Funeral LLP, 845 East 38th Street at Pine Avenue. Troy Christian Bielak
Troy Christian Bielak, age 42, of Erie, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 5, 2010. He was born in Erie on February 23, 1968. Troy is survived by his father, Edwin G. Bielak and stepmother, Mary Ossman/Bielak of Venango Township; his mother, Judy D. Barabas and step-father, James Barabas of Fairview, Pa.; brothers, Edwin Bielak, Jr. and his two children, Bethany and Becca of Fairview, Darrell Bielak and wife, Christin and their son, Zachary of Millcreek; stepbrothers, Thomas Tresler and wife, Joanne and their daughter, Rachel of Prince Frederick, Md., Adam Tresler and wife, Anne and their daughter, Shay of Fairview; many aunts, uncles, cousins, loving extended family members and good friends. Troy was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Norman and Edith Mussett; paternal grandparents, Ervin and Dorothy Bielak and uncles, James D. Bielak and Vincent W. Piccola, Jr. Troy will be missed by many. He was a loving son and good friend to all. He loved the outdoors and helping others. He was a true Oakland Raiders Fan and a great cook and an outstanding brother. May he rest in peace. Richard H. "Cheech" Brunner
Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather Richard H. Brunner, 85, a resident of Waterford, went home to be with the Lord Friday evening, March 5, 2010, at home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Erie, May 14, 1924, son of the late Anthony and Clara Hubert Brunner. He lived in the Erie area all of his life. He was a sheet metal mechanic for 46 years. Cheech was a 1942 graduate of Erie Tech High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, a life member of the VFW Post 28 in North East and a life member of Waterford American Legion Post 285. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Leona "Molly" Smith Brunner, three sons, Richard Brunner and his wife Mary Jo of Cambridge Springs, Anthony Brunner and his wife Pamela of Greene Township and James Brunner of Greene Township; two daughters, Teresa Leasure and her husband Charles of Venango Township and Ann Brunner of Greene Township. His also survived by seven grandchildren and two great granddaughters, many step grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a brother, Jerome Brunner. Friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Russell C. Schmidt and Son Funeral Home, 5000 Wattsburg Road (corner of Pine Ave. and East Gore Road, I-90 Exit 29). George Minor DeHaven
George Minor DeHaven, 81, of Brandon, Florida passed away there, Tuesday, March 2, 2010. Born in Conneautville, Pa. September 23, 1928 he was a son of the late Wade and Lillian Price DeHaven. He graduated from Harborcreek High School in 1947, and served in Korea as a Sgt. in the Marine Corps. He returned to a career in the plastic industry eventually becoming a Vice President of Plastic Engineering. He worked for Nosco Plastics and Perry Plastics in Erie, Pa and then as Vice President of PTR in Swainsboro Ga., and then Vice President of Kinder Plastics in Chicago, Ill. where he retired in 1992. He was also a member of various Plastic and Engineering societies during his career. Near his retirement it was recognized that he had gained the knowledge in the Plastic industry equivalent to that of a Doctorate degree. Additionally, Mr. DeHaven was a lifelong member of the Musicians union and had played the bass fiddle since the age of 14. Mr. DeHaven was preceded in death by his brothers, Harry and David, and his sisters, Bertha and Marion. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Mrs. Mary (Raydo) DeHaven of Brandon, Fla.; three sons and their wives, James & Nancy of Erie, Pa., Peter and Janice of Lutz, Fla., Mark & Stephanie, of Erie Pa.; four grandchildren, Douglas, Matthew, and Tonia DeHaven, and, Janelle (Jeff) Brett. He is also survived by his great grandson, Blake Brett and many nieces and nephews. Upon his retirement to Florida he became very active in his favorite hobby of woodworking. He donated numerous wooden creations for all the churches he belonged to in Chicago and Florida. James T. Hanusik
James T. Hanusik, age 82, formerly of Erie, died Monday March 1, 2010 at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla. after a six year battle with lung cancer. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. January 11, 1928, a son of the late Michael and Mary Mitcanko Hanasick. He was a WW II Veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving as a seaman first class in the South Pacific. He fought in three major conflicts. He retired in 1991 after 29 years with the American Sterilizer Company. He was a founding member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. Jim enjoyed fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Stephanie L. Vukson Hanusik of Florida; three daughters, Marlene Dunger and her husband, Jon; Roseann Dinda and her husband, John; and Janice Hanusik and her partner, Laurie Finch. A brother, Albert Hanasick, five grandchildren, David Perlberg and his wife, Lesley, Kristen Giardina and her husband, Joe, Erin Tobiasz and fiancé Shannon Lytle, Adam Tobiasz and Zachary Tobiasz; three great-grandchildren, Kaya Faris, Grace and Alex Perlberg, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Virginia Karkoski Harris
2/20/25-3/1/10 Virginia Harris passed away in St. Petersburg, Fla. formerly of Erie. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Lombardi (Dan), Paula Powers (Paul), Karen Sirak, Laurie Dulaney (Frank). And stepchildren, Robert Harris Jr., Michael Harris, Laurie Mendez. Brothers Melvin Brown and William Brown. Virginia is also survived by seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and nine step-grandchildren. Theodore D. Helfand
Theodore D. Helfand, age 91, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and formerly of Erie died Saturday, March 6, 2010 in Pittsburgh. Born in Erie on January 19, 1919 he was the son of the late Samuel and Sylvia Margolis Helfand. Theodore attended Academy High School, and was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Army from May 1942 to November 1945, having served in North Africa as a sergeant in the MP. After returning home from the was, he worked with his father-in-law David Linder, and eventually founded his own company Helfand Molded Plastics. He was a member of Congregation Brith Shalom, as well as a past member of The Erie Yacht Club, The Kahkwa Club, The Aviation Club, Maennerchor Club, and The Erie Chamber of Commerce. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Edith Linder Helfand; a son; Jeffrey L. Helfand; two brothers; Saul and Alfred Helfand and two sisters; Edith Saunders and Alice Schoenberg. Survivors include his daughter Susan Topolsky and her husband David of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren; Eric Topolsky and Joshua Topolsky and his wife Laura all of New York. He is further survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley and Irving Camp as well as many nieces and nephews, and devoted family and friends. Lloyd D. Henry
Lloyd D. Henry, age 67, of Erie died Friday, March 5, 2010 at his residence. He was born in Erie on October 18, 1942 the son of the late Ira and Eileen McAninch Henry. He graduated from East High School. He served in the U.S. Army doing three tours of duty in the Vietnam Conflict. He retired from GE after 27 years and was a bar tender at Hunter's Inn. He enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leonard and Lee Henry. He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years Susan Messenger Henry. A son, David M. Kevin J. Horanic age 58, of Erie, died peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. Kevin enjoyed boating, bowling, the Special Olympics, and the Three Stooges. He retired from the Gertrude Barber Center in 2005. He was preceded in death by parents Ingrid and Joseph Horanic and brother, David. Marjory Snowden Knapp
In Loving Memory On February 26, 2010, Marjory Knapp, went to meet her "Lord in Heaven." Born on October 12, 1918, in Meridian, Mississippi to Rosa Ella Ray Snowden and Wavah Earl Snowden; died in Seattle, Washington, the last of two brothers and a sister; Wavah Earl Junior, Little David and Mary Emma. Survived by son, A. Daniel Knapp (Helen), Orlando, Fla.; and daughter, Carol Knapp (Richard) Chandler, Seattle, Wash. Proud Grandmother of Arthur, Thomas and Kelly Knapp, Orlando, Fla.; and Courtney (Michael) Williams and Christopher Chandler, Seattle, Wash. Proud Great-Grandmother to Alexandria and Tyler of Orlando; and Adelaide, Raleigh and Chandler of Seattle. Marge lived in Erie, Pa. for 60 years, where she made many friends and retired from General Electric Company after 33 years of service. The family is grateful to G. Patrick Welsh, Judy Welsh, and children Lisa (Greg) O'Conner and Patrick Welsh, for "adopting" Marjory as their own. She spent holidays, birthdays and many fun times with the Welsh Family. Marge had a peaceful, happy and long life, spending her final years at Northaven Retirement Community in Seattle, always in close touch with family and friends in Orlando, Mississippi and Erie. Marjory is loved and missed by many and her love, kindness, and spirit will live in all of us forever. David Friend Mohler
Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather David Friend Mohler, 76, of Fairview, died Thursday, March 4, 2010, at St. Vincent Health Center after a lengthy illness. Born April 27, 1933, in Canton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Albert Henry and Ruth Friend Mohler. David was a graduate of Jackson High School in North Canton, Ohio, and Akron University. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Austria working in communications. David had worked for many years as manager of data processing for Goodyear Aerospace and Zurn Industries. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, loved automobiles and enjoyed driving. David is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Moore Mohler; a son, Christopher Mohler and his wife, Dawn, of Erie; and four grandchildren, Carson, Delaney, Maggie and Jackson Mohler, all of Erie. David H. Snyder, 83, of Harborcreek, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Erie Veterans Medical Center on Thursday, March 4, 2010. He was born In Edinboro, Pa. on August 8, 1926, son of the late John P. and Lavina Snyder. David was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran. He entered the Navy at the age of 17 and was one of six brothers who were all serving in the military at the same time. David enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, woodworking and animals, especially his two Yorkies. He is survived by his loving wife, Esther Hatt Snyder; his brother, William (Arlene) of North East; stepchildren, Angela Bradish (Arlie) of Harborcreek with whom he resided, Joseph Iesue (friend Carolyn Scalise), Geneva Weber (Don) of Erie, Marlene Lombardi of Harborcreek, Gloria Lombardozzi (Paul) of N.C., Don Weber (Toni) of S.C., Michael Wagner (Sophia) of Erie, Jennifer Wagner of Md., and Christine Erven (Ryan) of Erie; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret; five brothers, Paul, Charles, Edward, Richard and John Snyder; and two sisters, Mary Thomas and Agnes Putnam. M. Janet Clarke Steenberge
M. Janet Clarke Steenberge, 83, wife of recently deceased Carl W. Steenberge, died Saturday, March 6, 2010 of lung cancer. She died in her home surrounded by family. She was deeply loved by family and friends including her husband of 63 years, their children Michael (Colleen Kingston), Patrick (Janet Rupp), Gerald (Ginger Knoll), Colleen Zematis (Frank, dec.), Kathleen Dahlkemper (Dan), Timothy (Jeannie Deardeuff), Anne Jane Drexler (Steve), 33 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and Sr. Bernadette Bell, RSM. Beginning with a blind date in 1945, Carl and Janet led and nurtured their large family. Very active in all aspects of her family's life, Janet worked as Cafeteria Manager at St. Luke School for several years as well supported numerous events for St. Luke, Villa Maria Academy and Cathedral Prep. She was a long-serving Judge of Elections for her precinct in Erie. Janet also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and travelled globally to the activities of her children and their families. Janet was the true heart of a family built on beliefs, values, heritage and fun. She was passionately Irish and loved its music, dance, and humor. She was an avid seamstress and lovingly sewed for all, notably First Communion dresses for each of her 14 granddaughters. She was an active grandmother who kept an ever-stocked "candy drawer" and other goodies for "her kids". Janet reveled in large family meals, which she would extend for all who gathered. She insisted that dinner was family time together. Meals always included discussions of relevant topics of local and national interest where all opinions were encouraged. The family followed her example of community focus through their leadership in church, civic, commercial and charitable activities. Janet guided her family by her strong faith and supported and encouraged each of them to always do their personal best. Janet loved playing cards especially with her ladies' bridge club for over 50 years. In retirement she took up golf and was an active member of Lakeview Country Club's 18 Hole League and the Northwest Interclub League. She enjoyed sharing her interest in golf. Janet was a loving wife, wonderful mother, valued friend and a true leader. Janet was preceded in death by her dear husband Carl, parents Clarence and Helen Clarke, her sister Bettie Parmelee as well as her son-in-law Frank Zematis, granddaughter Aileen Steenberge and great grandson Charles Monnin. Sophia R. Ul, age 89, of Erie, died, Friday, March 5, 2010 at Hamot Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born in Waterford, Pa. on October 20, 1920, the daughter of Michael and Sophia KaminskiOblinski. She was a graduate of Waterford High School, Slippery Rock College and Edinboro University. Sophia was a member of St. Julia Roman Catholic Church where she was a past member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was a health and physical education teacher for 20 years at Strong Vincent High School, Villa Elementary School, and Westminster Jr. High in Millcreek. She also coached basketball, was a very good bowler, enjoyed boating and was a past member of the Power Squadron Women's Auxiliary. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Henry F. Ul, in 1992, three sisters, Eugenia Oblinski, Wanda Beezub, and Sybil Setcavage; and three brothers, Mitchell, Gustave and James J. Oblinski. She is survived by three daughters, Kathleen Fourspring and her husband Donald, of Edinboro, Susan Roche and her husband Timothy and Judith Taylor and her friend/ Greg, all of Millcreek; a son, Mark Ul and his wife Chris, of Springboro; and a sister, Martha Setcavage, of Pittsburgh, Pa. She is further survived by eleven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren with three on the way. Almerico (Elmer) Veoni
Almerico (Elmer) Veoni, age 94, a resident of St. Mary's at Asbury Ridge and formerly of Florida Ave. died Friday March 5, 2010 at St. Vincent Health Center. He was born February 28, 1916 in Coal Hollow, Pa., a small coal mining town in eastern Pennsylvania. Elmer received his education in a one room school house and after elementary school, he went to work in the coal mines with the aspirations to one day own his own business. Following the marriage to his first wife Lena his dream came true. He purchased a building at the corner of Sixth and Wallace and opened Elmer's Market. He and his wife operated that store together for many years. Following Lena's death, he sold the store and for the next few years he would divide his time between Erie in the summer and Florida in the winter. He then married Margaret Koval, an elementary school teacher and they have been happily married for 12 years. Elmer's family would like to thank St. Mary's Home and St. Vincent Health Center for their wonderful care and concern. Friends are invited to call at the John J.
